Tokyo’s Toyosu Market replaced Tsukiji as the city’s main wholesale fish market in 2018.
Toyosu Market opened in October 2018 on reclaimed land in Tokyo’s Kōtō ward. It took over the wholesale functions of the older Tsukiji inner market, including auctions and transactions involving fish, seafood, fruit, and vegetables.
The move was planned to provide newer facilities and improved hygiene and logistics. Tsukiji’s outer-market shops continued operating separately, which is why visitors may still associate Tsukiji with retail food businesses even after wholesale operations moved.
Toyosu is not simply another name for Tsukiji. Tsukiji was the historic market complex; Toyosu is its newer wholesale successor. The distinction matters when identifying Tokyo’s current wholesale market and its 2018 transition.
