Which title did the first Harry Potter book use in its American edition?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter book used the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in its American edition.

In the United Kingdom and several other markets, the book was published as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Scholastic changed the title for the United States because editors believed “sorcerer” would be more immediately understandable and appealing to American readers than “philosopher.”

The American edition was published in 1998, a year after the British release. The story, characters, and main plot remained the same, but the title change also required some wording changes inside the text. For example, “philosopher” was replaced by “sorcerer” in relevant passages.

The two titles refer to the same first novel in the seven-book series. This is why international readers may see different titles in book lists, citations, and discussions. The American title is not a separate sequel or adaptation; it is the United States edition of the original book.
