The TikTok predecessor app listed alongside Musical.ly in TikTok’s infobox is live.ly.
Live.ly was a live-streaming service created by Musical.ly in 2016. It allowed users to broadcast video, chat with viewers, and receive virtual goods, making it a companion to Musical.ly’s short lip-sync videos rather than a direct replacement for the main app.
ByteDance acquired Musical.ly’s parent company in 2017. In 2018, Musical.ly and live.ly were folded into TikTok, with accounts and data consolidated under the TikTok name. Live.ly was subsequently discontinued, while livestreaming became a feature inside TikTok.
Vine, Dubsmash, and Triller are common mix-ups because all were associated with short-form or music-focused video. They were separate services, however, and were not the predecessor app named with Musical.ly in TikTok’s infobox.
