Which Tesla model was the company’s first sedan?

The story behind the answer

The Tesla Model S was the company’s first production sedan.

Tesla introduced the Model S in 2009 and began deliveries in 2012. It was a battery-electric, five-door liftback sedan designed to offer substantially more range and interior space than the earlier Tesla Roadster. The Model S became a major step in Tesla’s move from a niche sports-car maker toward a broader electric-vehicle manufacturer.

The Model S is often confused with the Model 3 because the Model 3 became Tesla’s lower-priced, higher-volume sedan. The Model X was Tesla’s SUV, while the Model Y was a smaller crossover based heavily on Model 3 technology. Although the Model S is described as a sedan, its rear liftback gives it a large hatchback-style cargo opening.
