What car did SpaceX launch aboard the Falcon Heavy test flight in 2018?
Answer
Tesla Roadster
Answer
Tesla Roadster
SpaceX launched a Tesla Roadster aboard the Falcon Heavy test flight in 2018.
The Falcon Heavy test flight lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on February 6, 2018. Its unusual payload was a red Tesla Roadster, with a spacesuit-wearing mannequin called “Starman” in the driver’s seat.
The car was used as a mass simulator for the demonstration mission, replacing a conventional test payload. After launch, it was placed into a heliocentric orbit that crosses the orbit of Mars, although it was not sent to Mars or placed into orbit around the planet.
The Roadster was the original Tesla sports car, derived from the Lotus Elise and produced from 2008 to 2012. It is distinct from the later, second-generation Roadster that Tesla announced but had not entered series production by the time of this launch.
