Which tennis player won the Golden Slam in 1988?
Answer
Steffi Graf
Answer
Steffi Graf
Steffi Graf won the Golden Slam in 1988. She captured all four Grand Slam singles titles—the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open—and then won Olympic singles gold in Seoul.
Graf began the year by defeating Chris Evert in the Australian Open final. She followed that with victories over Natasha Zvereva at Roland Garros, Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon and Gabriela Sabatini at the US Open. At the Seoul Olympics, Graf defeated Gabriela Sabatini in the final to complete the unprecedented achievement.
A traditional Grand Slam means winning all four major tournaments in the same calendar year. The Golden Slam adds an Olympic singles gold medal to that accomplishment. Graf completed both at age 19, making 1988 the defining season of her career and one of the greatest individual years in tennis history.
No other player has matched Graf’s calendar-year Golden Slam in singles. Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova achieved many major victories, but neither won all four singles majors and Olympic gold in the same year.
