Which tennis player won her fifth Grand Slam title at the 2014 French Open?

The story behind the answer

Maria Sharapova won her fifth Grand Slam title at the 2014 French Open.

Sharapova defeated Romania’s Simona Halep in the women’s singles final at Roland-Garros on June 7, 2014. The match lasted more than three hours and ended 6–4, 6–7, 6–4, making it one of the most dramatic finals of that tournament.

The victory was Sharapova’s second French Open championship, following her 2012 title. Her five major singles titles also included Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006, and the Australian Open in 2008. The 2014 French Open remained her fifth and final Grand Slam title.

The result was especially notable because Halep was playing in her first Grand Slam final, while Sharapova had extensive experience in major championship matches. Sharapova’s win also continued her strong record on clay, even though the surface was not always considered her most natural one. Serena Williams, the defending champion, lost in the second round.
