It was developed for a new generation while retaining the core team of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. The show followed the turtles as they learned ninjutsu and explored the surface world of New York City.
The 2012 program ran for five seasons and 124 episodes. It was produced after Nickelodeon acquired the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise from co-creator Peter Laird. The series is distinct from the 1987 cartoon and from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which premiered on Nickelodeon in 2018 with a different visual style and mythology.
