CBS broadcast the Bicentennial Minute from 1974 through the end of 1976.
The Bicentennial Minute was a series of short television vignettes created to count down to and commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. The segments aired during the years leading into the 1976 celebration.
Each brief feature presented a historical topic connected with the United States. The format allowed CBS to weave Bicentennial material into ordinary programming rather than limiting history coverage to a single documentary or holiday broadcast.
CBS also aired extensive Bicentennial programming around July 3 and 4, 1976. Other networks produced their own specials, including NBC’s coverage and ABC’s Great American Birthday Party, but the recurring Bicentennial Minute was specifically associated with CBS.
