Arsenal won the opening match of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The champions began their title defence at home against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, 21 August 2026. Arsenal won 3–0 at the Emirates Stadium, making them the first team to collect points in the new campaign.
The fixture had particular significance because Arsenal entered the season as defending champions, while Coventry were returning to the top flight after a 25-year absence. The match therefore paired the reigning champions with the club making one of the most notable Premier League comebacks.
This was the season’s first fixture, not merely the first match played on Saturday. Hull City versus Manchester United was the first Saturday lunchtime game, while Fulham versus Chelsea was the final match of the opening round on Monday.
