Brawn GP won both Formula One championships in its only season, 2009.
The team was created after Honda withdrew from Formula One during the global financial crisis. Team principal Ross Brawn led a management buyout, renamed the operation Brawn GP, and adapted its Honda-developed car to use Mercedes engines. The resulting BGP 001 proved immediately competitive.
Jenson Button won six of the first seven races, including Brawn’s debut at the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, where he and Rubens Barrichello finished first and second. The car’s controversial double diffuser gave the team a major early-season aerodynamic advantage; the FIA later ruled the design legal.
Button secured the Drivers’ Championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix on 18 October 2009. Brawn also clinched the Constructors’ Championship at the same race. The team finished with eight victories and 172 points, then was sold to Mercedes and disappeared as a constructor before the 2010 season. Jordan, BMW Sauber and Toyota all competed in 2009 but did not win both titles.
