The 2026–27 Premier League champions Arsenal were scheduled to face Coventry City first.
Arsenal began their title defence at home on Friday 21 August 2026. The match was the opening fixture of the entire league season, giving the champions the traditional spotlight of the curtain-raiser.
Coventry City were one of three promoted teams in the 2026–27 Premier League. They had returned to the top division after 25 years, making their first-day visit to Arsenal especially notable. Ipswich Town and Hull City were the other promoted clubs.
The fixture list was released on 19 June 2026. Arsenal’s opening game was set for Emirates Stadium at 20:00 BST, while the weekend later included Hull City versus Manchester United, Ipswich Town versus Sunderland, and several other first-round fixtures.
