Which team was the first to win the IPL final held outside India?

The story behind the answer

The Deccan Chargers were the first team to win an IPL final held outside India.

The achievement came in the 2009 Indian Premier League, which was moved entirely to South Africa because of security and scheduling concerns surrounding India's general election. The final took place on 24 May 2009 at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs. Batting first, Deccan scored 143 for 6, with Herschelle Gibbs making an unbeaten 53. Bangalore could manage 137 for 9 in reply. Deccan's title was led by Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist, who captained the side and was named Player of the Series.

A common mix-up is to associate the first overseas IPL final with a later edition. The 2009 season was the league's second, and it remains unique because the entire tournament—not just the final—was staged outside India. The Deccan Chargers later ceased to exist as an IPL franchise; their Hyderabad-based successor, Sunrisers Hyderabad, debuted in 2013.
