Brawn GP was rebranded as Mercedes before the 2010 Formula One season. Mercedes-Benz and investment partner Aabar acquired a controlling stake in the 2009 championship-winning team, which then entered 2010 as Mercedes GP Petronas.
Brawn GP itself had been created after Honda withdrew from Formula One at the end of 2008. Ross Brawn’s management group took over the former Honda operation, renamed it Brawn GP and used Mercedes-Benz engines in 2009. The team immediately achieved a remarkable double: Jenson Button won the Drivers’ Championship and Brawn won the Constructors’ Championship.
On 16 November 2009, Daimler and Aabar announced the purchase of a 75.1% stake in Brawn GP. The team’s Brackley base, personnel and much of its technical structure continued into the Mercedes era, making the rebranding a direct institutional transition rather than a completely new entry.
Honda is therefore a tempting but incomplete answer: Brawn GP was Honda’s successor, not the team that was itself renamed Mercedes for 2010. BMW Sauber and Toyota followed separate histories.
