Toro Rosso took its only Formula One victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.
The race took place at Monza on 14 September 2008 in heavy rain. Sebastian Vettel started from pole position for Toro Rosso and controlled the race as conditions gradually improved, beating McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen and BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica. Vettel completed all 53 laps for his first Grand Prix victory.
The result was historic for more than one reason. At 21 years and 73 days, Vettel became the youngest Formula One race winner at the time. Toro Rosso also secured its maiden victory, despite using a Ferrari engine and a car based on the team's own design. The achievement was remarkable because Toro Rosso was the successor to Minardi, a popular team that had rarely challenged for wins.
The team name means “Red Bull” in Italian. Red Bull Racing had already won races, but its sister outfit had not. Later victories came under the AlphaTauri name after a rebrand, so the 2008 result remains Toro Rosso's defining win under that identity.
