Newcastle United drew 2–2 with Liverpool at St James’ Park during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The Sunday match was one of the round’s most dramatic games. Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Elanga, Liverpool equalised through Cody Gakpo, and Joe Willock restored the home side’s advantage.
Liverpool eventually rescued a point when Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty. The late equaliser meant both clubs began the season with one point rather than a victory.
The match also marked competitive managerial debuts for Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle and Andoni Iraola at Liverpool. St James’ Park is Newcastle’s traditional home and is known for its steep stands and intense atmosphere.
