Which team did Wayne Gretzky play for in his final NHL season?
Answer
New York Rangers
Answer
New York Rangers
Wayne Gretzky played for the New York Rangers in his final NHL season. He joined the Rangers in 1996 and remained with the club through the 1998–99 season, the last campaign of his playing career.
Gretzky’s Rangers tenure followed his years with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, and a brief spell with the St. Louis Blues. In New York, he reunited with former Edmonton teammate Mark Messier and served as the Rangers’ captain during the 1998–99 season. Although he was no longer producing at his earlier record-setting pace, he remained an elite passer and team leader.
His final Rangers game was played at Madison Square Garden on April 18, 1999, against the Pittsburgh Penguins. New York lost 2–1 in overtime, but Gretzky assisted on Brian Leetch’s goal and finished his career with a point.
The most likely confusion is with the Los Angeles Kings, where Gretzky spent eight seasons and helped take the club to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final. His final three NHL seasons, however, were with the Rangers.
