Developed and published by Atari Games for arcades, the game was designed as an exaggerated, fast-moving alternative to more realistic hockey simulations such as EA Sports’ NHL series. Its signature features included power shots, power checks and spectacular saves, giving matches an intentionally over-the-top arcade feel.

The Nintendo 64 version arrived about a month after the arcade release and became the first Nintendo 64 game to support four-player competition. Gretzky’s skating movements were modeled from videotaped skating sessions, helping the game promote its 3D presentation. A sequel, Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ’98, followed in 1997.
