Newcastle United played Liverpool during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The match was scheduled for Sunday, 23 August 2026, at St James’ Park. It was the later of the three Sunday fixtures in the opening round, following Manchester City versus AFC Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion versus Aston Villa.
Liverpool began the season under new head coach Andoni Iraola, who had previously managed Bournemouth. Newcastle also had a new manager: Matthias Jaissle was appointed after Eddie Howe stepped down. Those coaching changes added extra interest to a fixture between two long-established Premier League clubs.
The match was scheduled to complete Sunday’s programme at 16:30 BST. It was not the final fixture of the entire opening weekend, however, because Fulham versus Chelsea was set for Monday evening. The distinction between the final Sunday match and the final match of the round is a common source of confusion.
