Michael Schumacher drove for Ferrari when he won the 2000 Formula One World Drivers' Championship.
Schumacher secured the 2000 title for Ferrari at the Japanese Grand Prix, the season’s penultimate race. He beat McLaren rival Mika Häkkinen after a close championship battle and finished the year with 108 points. It was Schumacher’s third drivers’ title and Ferrari’s first drivers’ championship since Jody Scheckter won in 1979.
The 2000 season was especially important in Ferrari’s modern history. Schumacher had joined the team in 1996, and Ferrari had gradually become a title contender through improved reliability, engineering and teamwork. His championship ended a long drought and began Ferrari’s dominant run in the early 2000s.
Ferrari also won the 2000 Constructors’ Championship, with Schumacher’s teammate Rubens Barrichello contributing points. The common mix-up is with Schumacher’s earlier career: he won his first two drivers’ titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, but his 2000 crown came with Ferrari.
