Both clubs were part of the opening weekend’s promoted-team storyline. Ipswich had returned to the top flight after a one-year absence, while Sunderland were also competing in the Premier League after promotion from the Championship. Their meeting was therefore an all-promoted-team fixture.
Ipswich’s victory meant that two promoted clubs won on the opening weekend: Ipswich and Hull City. Coventry City, the third promoted side, began with a defeat against Arsenal in the season opener.
