Defending champions Arsenal beat Coventry City in their 2026–27 Premier League opener.
Arsenal won 3–0 on Friday 21 August 2026, beginning their title defence with three points and a clean sheet. The match was played at Emirates Stadium and served as the first fixture of the new Premier League season.
Coventry City were one of three promoted clubs in 2026–27, alongside Ipswich Town and Hull City. Their return was especially significant because Coventry had spent 25 years outside the Premier League. That made the opening fixture a meeting between the reigning champions and one of the division’s returning clubs.
The other promoted sides began against different opponents: Ipswich Town faced Sunderland, while Hull City hosted Manchester United. Those fixtures are easy to mix up because all three promoted clubs appeared in the opening round, but only Coventry faced Arsenal.
