Which team became the first California-based NHL club to win the Stanley Cup?
Answer
Anaheim Ducks
Answer
Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks became the first California-based NHL team to win the Stanley Cup in 2007.
Anaheim defeated the Ottawa Senators four games to one in the 2007 Stanley Cup Final. The franchise, then known as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, won its first championship in its 14th season. Scott Niedermayer received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
The Ducks were led by a strong defensive group featuring Niedermayer and Chris Pronger, along with goaltender Jean-Sébastien Giguère. Their final victory completed a breakthrough for hockey in Southern California.
The Los Angeles Kings later became the second California team to win the Cup, taking championships in 2012 and 2014. The San Jose Sharks have reached the Final but had not won the trophy through the 2023–24 season.
