Which Taoist immortal is known for his iron crutch?

The story behind the answer

The Taoist immortal known for his iron crutch is Li Tieguai.

Li Tieguai, whose name means roughly “Li with the Iron Crutch,” is one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese religion and folklore. He is commonly shown as an unkempt older beggar leaning on an iron crutch and carrying a calabash gourd filled with medicine. His rough appearance contrasts with his reputation for helping the sick, poor, and oppressed.

Legend says that Li was originally named Li Xuan. In one version, his spirit returned to his body after an accident, only to find that the body had been cremated. He entered the body of a disabled beggar and thereafter retained the crutch as his identifying emblem. Stories vary, and some place his life in the Yuan dynasty while also presenting him as a disciple of Laozi.

The gourd and crutch are important clues in art. The crutch is also used as a symbol by some traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, so Li is often connected with healing.
