Which Taoist deity is the god of city walls and moats? Chenghuang.
Chenghuang, also called Chenghuangshen and commonly translated as the City God, is a tutelary deity associated with protecting a particular city, town, or village. The name itself explains the original role: cheng means a city wall or fortified city, while huang means a moat. Together, the title points directly to the defenses surrounding an urban settlement.
Chenghuang worship developed over many centuries and became connected with local administration. In many traditions, the deity was a deceased government official or respected local leader elevated to divine office. The City God was believed to protect residents, respond to disasters, supervise local spirits, and judge the souls of the dead associated with the community.
Chenghuang is sometimes confused with Tudi Gong, the local earth god. Tudi Gong generally has a more local and lower-ranking territorial role, while Chenghuang traditionally governs an entire town or city. Men Shen guard doors, and Zao Jun is associated with the household hearth, so neither is the city’s tutelary deity.
