Which Tanzanian national park is home to the highest mountain in Africa?

Kilimanjaro National Park is the Tanzanian national park home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak, making it the highest point in Africa and the world’s highest free-standing mountain. The park protects the mountain and its surrounding ecosystems, which change dramatically with elevation, from cultivated foothills and rainforest to alpine desert and the icy summit zone.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcanic massif made up of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak; Mawenzi and Shira are extinct volcanic cones. The mountain was incorporated into the national park in 1973, and Kilimanjaro National Park became a major destination for trekkers and climbers.

The park is sometimes confused with Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro Conservation Area, both famous Tanzanian destinations. Neither contains Africa’s highest mountain.
