Which Tangut kingdom was conquered by Genghis Khan just before his death?

The story behind the answer

Which Tangut kingdom was conquered by Genghis Khan just before his death? The answer is Western Xia. Also known as the Xi Xia or Tangut Empire, Western Xia ruled a strategically important region in what is now northwestern China, along the routes linking Mongolia, Central Asia, and northern China.

Genghis Khan first attacked Western Xia in 1205 and launched a larger invasion in 1209. The Tangut state eventually submitted and became a Mongol tributary, but it later resisted Mongol demands for troops and support. Genghis Khan returned for a final campaign in 1226, capturing major cities and destroying the kingdom’s remaining independence.

Genghis Khan died in 1227 during this campaign, or shortly afterward depending on how the chronology is reconstructed. Western Xia’s final defeat therefore became one of the last major conquests of his life. The Tangut population, language, and Buddhist culture were distinct from those of the Chinese dynasties to the east.

The other choices were different states: the Liao and Jin were Khitan and Jurchen-led powers, while the Song survived in southern China until the later Mongol conquest.
