Which Persian historian wrote The History of the World Conqueror, a major source on Genghis Khan's campaigns?

The story behind the answer

Ata-Malik Juvayni wrote The History of the World Conqueror, the major Persian chronicle of Genghis Khan’s campaigns.

Juvayni was a Persian bureaucrat and historian born in 1226. He served the Mongol rulers and visited Karakorum, the Mongol imperial capital, where he began composing his history around 1252–1253. His position gave him access to court information, official reports, and eyewitness testimony.

The work covers the Mongol conquest of Central Asia and Persia, including the campaigns of Genghis Khan, the rise of Hulagu Khan, the destruction of Alamut, and the conquest of Baghdad in 1258. Juvayni accompanied Hulagu during campaigns against the Isma'ilis and in Iraq, making parts of his account unusually close to the events described.

The chronicle is also known as the Tarikh-i Jahangushay, meaning “History of the World Conqueror.” It ends around 1260, despite Juvayni living until 1283. Rashid al-Din later wrote another major Mongol history, but he was not the author of this work.
