Speaking in Tongues was the Talking Heads LP that produced their first Top 10 hit, “Burning Down the House.”

Released in 1983, Speaking in Tongues was the band's fifth studio album and marked a major commercial breakthrough. “Burning Down the House” was released as its first single and reached No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it Talking Heads' first and only U.S. Top 10 single.

The song grew out of the band's increasingly rhythmic, funk-influenced sound. Bassist Tina Weymouth, drummer Chris Frantz, guitarist-keyboardist Jerry Harrison, and singer-guitarist David Byrne shaped the album through collaborative studio work, with additional percussion and electronic textures adding to its danceable feel. The album also contains “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” another of the band's best-known songs. A common mix-up is choosing Remain in Light, the influential 1980 album that preceded it; that record was critically important, but its songs did not produce Talking Heads' first U.S. Top 10 hit.
