Which Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer is commonly known by the acronym TSMC?
Answer
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company
Answer
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer commonly known as TSMC.
TSMC was founded in 1987 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, by Morris Chang. It pioneered the dedicated foundry model, in which a company manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than primarily selling chips under its own brand.
This model allows customers such as fabless chip designers to use advanced manufacturing plants without building those factories themselves. TSMC produces processors and other semiconductors for smartphones, computers, data centers, automobiles, and artificial-intelligence systems.
TSMC is not the same as a chip-design company such as Nvidia or AMD. Those firms design important processors, while TSMC is chiefly a contract manufacturer. Its technological lead, enormous capital investment, and role in global electronics supply chains have made it one of the world’s most valuable companies.
