PetroChina briefly became the first company to exceed a $1 trillion valuation after listing shares in China in 2007.
PetroChina reached a market value above $1 trillion on November 5, 2007, during its debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The company’s shares surged on the first trading day, producing a nominal valuation that briefly exceeded the market values of established global leaders.
The record was short-lived because the stock price fell sharply after the initial excitement. PetroChina’s episode is therefore often discussed as a temporary market-cap peak rather than a durable leadership position. Market capitalization can change dramatically when a newly listed company experiences unusually strong demand.
PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. This fact is sometimes confused with Apple’s 2018 milestone, which made Apple the first U.S. company to reach $1 trillion and became a more durable symbol of technology-sector growth.
