TSMC manufactures chips designed by Nvidia, Apple, and many other firms.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, is the world’s leading dedicated semiconductor foundry. A foundry manufactures chips for customers that design their own processors and often do not operate large fabrication plants.
TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its business model helped popularize the separation between chip design and chip manufacturing. Customers can focus on architecture and products while TSMC invests in expensive fabrication facilities and process technology.
The company manufactures a wide range of chips, including processors for smartphones, personal computers, data centers, and artificial-intelligence systems. Nvidia and Apple design their own chips, so TSMC is not the designer of those products. ASML, another frequent wrong answer, makes advanced lithography equipment used by chip manufacturers rather than manufacturing the chips themselves.
