TSMC manufactures advanced chips for many of the world’s highest-valued technology companies.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor foundry. A foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies, allowing customers to specialize in chip architecture and software rather than operating their own fabrication plants.
TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its business model helped establish the modern fabless semiconductor industry, in which companies such as Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm can design chips while outsourcing production.
TSMC’s advanced manufacturing processes are especially important for high-performance processors used in smartphones, data centers, and artificial-intelligence systems. Its strategic importance and strong demand have made it one of the most valuable listed companies, although its market-cap ranking changes with share prices.
