Tesla was the first primarily automaking company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla’s market value surpassed $1 trillion in October 2021 after the stock rose sharply. The company was valued not only for current vehicle sales but also for expectations about future electric-vehicle production, battery technology, software, and energy storage.
Tesla began delivering the Roadster in 2008 and later expanded its range with the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y. The Model 3 and Model Y were especially important in making Tesla’s vehicles available to a broader market.
Market capitalization reflects investor expectations as well as present financial results. Tesla’s valuation therefore differed from traditional measures such as vehicle production or annual revenue. Other automakers, including Toyota, Volkswagen, and China’s BYD, have also been major electric-vehicle competitors, but Tesla reached the trillion-dollar threshold first among automakers.
