TSMC manufactures advanced chips for companies including Apple and Nvidia.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor foundry. It manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand. This business model helped separate chip design from chip fabrication.
TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its customers include major designers of processors for smartphones, computers, graphics systems, and artificial intelligence. The company operates fabrication plants in Taiwan and has announced or built facilities in other countries, including the United States and Japan.
TSMC is not the same as Nvidia. Nvidia designs processors such as GPUs, while TSMC manufactures many designs created by Nvidia and other customers. This distinction between fabless design and foundry manufacturing is central to the modern semiconductor industry.
