TSMC became the first Asian company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2024.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company crossed the threshold in July 2024 as investors responded to strong demand for advanced chips used in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. TSMC is the world’s leading dedicated semiconductor foundry, manufacturing chips designed by many other companies.
The company was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its contract-manufacturing model helped separate chip design from fabrication, allowing customers to produce advanced processors without owning their own leading-edge factories.
TSMC is often confused with a chip brand that sells finished consumer devices. It generally manufactures semiconductors for customers, including major designers such as Apple and Nvidia. Its market value therefore reflects the importance of the broader semiconductor supply chain.
