Which Taiwan-based foundry is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor contract manufacturer?

The story behind the answer

TSMC is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor contract manufacturer.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, manufactures chips designed by other companies. It is known as a pure-play foundry because it generally does not sell competing branded chips of its own in the way integrated device manufacturers do.

TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its model allowed companies such as Nvidia, Apple, AMD, and Qualcomm to design processors while outsourcing fabrication to a specialized manufacturer.

The company is central to the market-cap discussion because demand for advanced AI processors has increased the strategic value of leading-edge chip production. TSMC’s own valuation can fluctuate with semiconductor cycles, but its manufacturing role is a comparatively stable industry fact. It is often confused with Samsung, which both designs products and operates semiconductor foundries.
