Which table tennis player won the 1993 women’s singles World Championship title?

The story behind the answer

Deng Yaping won the women’s singles title at the 1993 World Table Tennis Championships.

The championship was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, where Deng successfully defended the world singles title she had first won in 1991. She defeated teammate Qiao Hong in the final, continuing a period of Chinese dominance in the women’s event.

Deng was only about 1.50 metres tall, but her compact stature supported exceptional speed, balance, and close-to-the-table attacking play. Her quick-punching style and strong forehand made her one of the most successful players in table tennis history.

The 1993 title was part of Deng’s broader record: she also won Olympic women’s singles gold in 1992 and 1996, plus multiple team and doubles world titles. Her name is sometimes written with a hyphen as Deng Ya-ping, but the commonly used English spelling is Deng Yaping.
