In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, Aragorn carries Andúril after the sword is reforged.
Andúril is made from the shards of Narsil, the sword of Elendil. Narsil was broken when Elendil fell in battle against Sauron at the end of the Second Age. Isildur, Elendil’s son, used the broken sword to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand.
The shards remained an heirloom of the kings of Gondor and were later carried by Aragorn’s ancestors. Before the Fellowship leaves Rivendell, the sword is reforged and given the name Andúril, meaning “Flame of the West.”
A common mix-up is to call the sword simply Narsil throughout Aragorn’s story. Narsil is the original weapon; Andúril is its reforged form. Glamdring belongs to Gandalf, Sting is associated with Bilbo and Frodo, and Orcrist was carried by Thorin Oakenshield.
