Which Swiss chocolatier founded the company that developed Lindor truffles?

The story behind the answer

Rodolphe Lindt founded the Swiss company that later developed Lindor truffles.

Rodolphe Lindt established a chocolate factory in Bern in 1879. He is especially associated with the development of the conching process, which helped produce chocolate with a smoother texture and more refined flavour. His company was later acquired by Chocolat Sprüngli, creating the Lindt & Sprüngli business known today.

Lindor truffles were introduced much later, in 1969, initially as a chocolate bar before becoming associated with the familiar individually wrapped spherical truffles. Their defining feature is a hard chocolate shell surrounding a soft, melting filling.

A common mistake is to credit Rodolphe Lindt personally with inventing Lindor. He founded the historical Lindt business decades before Lindor was created. The name “Lindor” combines “Lindt” with “or,” the French word for gold.
