Which Swedish scientist gave the Celsius temperature scale its name?

The story behind the answer

Anders Celsius gave the Celsius temperature scale its name.

Celsius was a Swedish astronomer and physicist born in Uppsala in 1701. In 1742, he proposed a temperature scale based on two fixed points associated with water: boiling and freezing. His original arrangement placed 0 degrees at boiling and 100 degrees at freezing under standard conditions.

After Celsius’s death in 1744, the scale was reversed into the form now familiar in everyday use, with 0 degrees for water’s freezing point and 100 degrees for its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure. The unit was initially called the centigrade degree and was renamed the degree Celsius in 1948.

The modern Celsius scale is used worldwide, especially in weather reports and scientific work. Its interval is the same size as one kelvin; only the zero points differ, because 0 °C equals 273.15 K.
