What is the name of Iceland’s highest mountain peak?

The story behind the answer

Hvannadalshnúkur is Iceland’s highest mountain peak.

The peak rises to about 2,110 metres above sea level and forms part of Öræfajökull, a volcanic mountain massif in southeast Iceland. Öræfajökull is covered by an ice cap and lies within Vatnajökull National Park, one of Europe’s largest protected areas.

Hvannadalshnúkur is a summit on the rim of Öræfajökull’s crater rather than an isolated mountain range. Its name is often written Hvannadalshnúkur in Icelandic, with the accented characters retained in the original spelling.

The mountain is sometimes confused with Iceland’s most famous volcanoes or distinctive peaks, such as Snæfellsjökull and Kirkjufell. Those mountains are notable landmarks, but neither is Iceland’s highest point. Reaching Hvannadalshnúkur generally requires glacier-travel skills and suitable climbing conditions.
