What is the name of the bridge linking Denmark’s Zealand and Funen across the Great Belt?

The story behind the answer

The Great Belt Bridge is the main bridge link connecting Denmark’s islands of Zealand and Funen across the Great Belt.

The Great Belt Fixed Link is a combined transport connection made up of a suspension bridge, a railway tunnel, and road and rail approaches. Its eastern section, the East Bridge, carries road traffic between Zealand and the small island of Sprogø. The western section connects Sprogø with Funen and includes both a road bridge and a rail tunnel.

The link opened in stages between 1997 and 1998. Before it was built, travellers and freight relied on ferries to cross the Great Belt, a major passage between the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. The project greatly reduced travel times across Denmark and strengthened the country’s internal road and rail network.

The Great Belt Bridge is sometimes confused with the Øresund Bridge, which links Denmark and Sweden. The Øresund route runs from Copenhagen to Malmö, while the Great Belt link remains entirely within Denmark.
