Which Swedish city is home to the headquarters of the Nobel Foundation?

The story behind the answer

Stockholm is home to the headquarters of the Nobel Foundation.

The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 to manage the finances and administration supporting the prizes created by Alfred Nobel’s will. Its headquarters are in Stockholm, Sweden, where the foundation oversees the long-term protection and development of the Nobel Prize’s financial assets and institutional framework.

Stockholm is also the main city for the Nobel Prize ceremonies. The Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Economic Sciences are presented in Stockholm on 10 December. The Nobel Peace Prize is the exception and is presented in Oslo.

The foundation itself does not select most laureates. Swedish and Norwegian prize-awarding bodies do that work: for example, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects the Physics and Chemistry laureates, while the Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the Peace Prize laureate. The foundation’s role is administrative and financial rather than choosing winners.
