Which Swedish author created Pippi Longstocking?

The story behind the answer

Swedish author Astrid Lindgren created Pippi Longstocking.

Lindgren first invented Pippi stories for her daughter Karin, who asked for a story about a character with that name while recovering from illness. The first Pippi book was published in Swedish in 1945. Pippi is an unusually strong, independent child who lives without adult supervision at Villa Villekulla with her horse and monkey.

The character quickly became one of the best-known figures in children’s literature. Lindgren’s books have been translated into many languages and adapted for film, television, theatre, and illustrated editions. Pippi’s independence and challenges to adult authority helped make the series distinctive.

Pippi is sometimes mistakenly attributed to Finnish author Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins. Selma Lagerlöf and Sigrid Undset were also major Scandinavian writers, but neither created Pippi Longstocking.
