Which surgeon performed the first successful human heart transplant in 1967?
Answer
Christiaan Barnard
Answer
Christiaan Barnard
Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human heart transplant in 1967.
On 3 December 1967, Barnard led a surgical team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The recipient was Louis Washkansky, who received the heart of Denise Darvall after her fatal injuries. Washkansky survived for 18 days before dying from pneumonia while taking immunosuppressive drugs.
The operation built on earlier experimental and clinical advances, including techniques developed by American surgeon Norman Shumway. Transplant medicine also depended on controlling immune rejection, because the body can identify a donor organ as foreign and attack it.
“Successful” refers to the patient surviving the operation and living afterward, not to long-term survival. Later improvements in donor selection, surgical care, and immunosuppressive medicines made heart transplantation much more effective.
