Which subreddit was the first to reach 1 million subscribers?

The story behind the answer

r/announcements was the first subreddit widely recognized as reaching 1 million subscribers.

Unlike most communities, r/announcements is an official Reddit channel used to communicate site-wide news, feature launches, policy changes, and important service updates. Its unusually rapid growth was closely tied to Reddit's practice of automatically subscribing many new accounts to selected default communities, including r/announcements.

That makes the milestone different from a normal fan or topic-based subreddit earning followers one by one. Communities such as r/funny, r/pics, and r/AskReddit later became enormous through organic participation, but r/announcements benefited from its special position inside Reddit's onboarding system. Subscriber totals therefore measured exposure as well as deliberate interest.

The word “subscriber” can also cause confusion: Reddit later changed how default communities worked, and subscriber counts continue to change. The historical answer refers to the early Reddit era, when administrators could place communities into new users' default subscription sets. Today, r/announcements remains among Reddit's largest communities, even though its function is mainly broadcast rather than discussion.
