Which studio was the lead developer of the original Assassin’s Creed?
Answer
Ubisoft Montreal
Answer
Ubisoft Montreal
Ubisoft Montreal was the lead developer of the original Assassin’s Creed.
Ubisoft Montreal developed the game for Ubisoft, with additional contributions from other Ubisoft studios. The project grew out of ideas associated with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and evolved into a new open-world action game focused on stealth, parkour, and historical settings.
The Montreal team created the game’s central systems, including free-running across city architecture, social stealth, assassination investigations, and the Animus framing device. The finished title launched in 2007 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before reaching Windows the following year.
Ubisoft Quebec later led development on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, while Ubisoft Montreal led several other major entries, including Origins and Valhalla. Those later studio roles can make the original developer easy to misremember, but the first game is credited primarily to Ubisoft Montreal.
