Which Studio Ghibli film features a moving castle powered by the fire demon Calcifer?

The story behind the answer

Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle features a moving castle powered by the fire demon Calcifer.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Howl’s Moving Castle was released in Japan in 2004. Its central setting is a bizarre walking structure assembled from metal, pipes, towers, doors, and mechanical parts. Calcifer lives in the hearth and supplies the magical force that makes the castle operate.

Calcifer is bound by a contract to the wizard Howl, but the film gradually reveals that their relationship is more complicated than a simple master-and-servant arrangement. Sophie, the story’s heroine, becomes involved with both characters after the Witch of the Waste transforms her into an old woman.

The film was loosely adapted from Diana Wynne Jones’s 1986 fantasy novel of the same name. The movie changes several characters and story elements, including the emphasis on war and the nature of Howl’s curse. It should not be confused with Castle in the Sky, another Ghibli fantasy featuring a flying castle rather than a walking one.
