Who directed Studio Ghibli’s 1997 film Princess Mononoke?

The story behind the answer

Studio Ghibli’s 1997 film Princess Mononoke was directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Miyazaki also wrote the screenplay and developed the film’s large-scale conflict between industrial expansion and the natural world. The story follows Prince Ashitaka, who becomes involved in the struggle between Iron Town and the forest’s animal gods. Its environmental themes are complex rather than purely heroic or villainous.

Princess Mononoke was a major production for Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki used extensive hand-drawn animation while also incorporating computer-generated imagery for selected effects, including the spreading corruption associated with the boar god Nago.

A common mix-up is attributing the film to Isao Takahata, another founding director of Studio Ghibli. Takahata directed films such as Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, but Princess Mononoke is a Miyazaki film.
